Being Successful – What Does This Mean to You?

Being Successful – What Does This Mean to You?

“I won’t be happy until I have a million dollar house, another vacation house on the beach, a few mil in the bank so I can travel the world with my wife.” Then he looked at me and asked, “What does being successful mean to you?” Tim was serious. He was the sole proprietor of a landscaping company. I was his hired hand and five years older than him, a musician making some extra bucks.

He worked hard. He built his business and had a crew of ten or more. Long days mowing 15 yards a day and usually included Saturdays. Sundays, if it rained too much during the week. He paid off their starter home and built a much bigger house in an elite area which was close to the million dollar mark. Along the way, he socked money away, talking about the travels he and his wife were going to have… once he was successful. Then, Tim died suddenly, barely 50. And at that time, in his mind, he wasn’t successful yet.

My Answer

I had answered Tim that day. I had told him that I was nearly as successful as I wanted to be. I had two wonderful children, I played music, which was my passion, owned a modest house which although it wasn’t paid for, it wasn’t a hardship, either. I only had a bit farther to go to be successful. That was mainly to be able to do what I wanted to do, even if nothing other than going out to eat, without having to look in my billfold or bank account to make sure I could afford it. At that point, I would feel I was successful.

Two totally different ideas of what being successful was. Who was right? Who was wrong? I don’t think there is an answer for that. Everyone is different. Everyone has their own ideas in their head what they want to accomplish in life and where they’d consider themselves “successful”.

What About You?

So, what does it mean to you? Fine cars? A huge bankroll? Your name in lights or at the tip of everyone’s tongue? Or does it mean a sense of peace with yourself? Able to enjoy simple things in life without worry. Nothing huge. Nothing over the top. Just be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say, “I am the happiest I’ve been in my life and I hope it lasts forever.”

Do you want to work around the clock for most of your life like Tim did to achieve that goal of success and miss everything going on around you. Or once you’re finally “successful”, you’re too old to be able to enjoy it. There are better ways to be successful and to be able to enjoy it along the way. This is very popular with the “new rich” which I will cover at another time.

Work is Involved

Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you didn’t plant. Regardless of what your idea of being successful is, there will be work involved and it won’t come overnight. This is with any kind of success. Whether you want to just be happy and enjoy your family and have the simple things in life or if you want a garage of collectible cars and non-stop travel vacations. Each will take their own level of consistent work and planning to get there. And each, no matter how simple of a life you want, without worry, will take a little more money.

One way to get yourself on the right track is to read. If you talk to any millionaire, you’ll find that they have read hundreds of books. You can never learn too much and reading will speed this process up. You may not know what you want, yet. But, there are books that can guide you in the right direction for success no matter what that might be. One book is Springboard: Launching Your Personal Search for Success. This book doesn’t dictate what you should do to be successful, but instead, it helps you discover what gives your life true meaning. And it helps you find what gives your life excitement!

My Route

The route I chose to reach my goal of being successful was the internet. As I grew older, the lure of a less physical work and less strain on my body was quite tempting. And I found I enjoyed being on the internet and writing. So, I began researching the different areas of maybe increasing my income to get me closer to my goal. And finding the correct platform to do this took me a few years, unfortunately. But, I finally found that there were quite a few choices of earning an income on the internet and their were people who would actually help you. At no cost, even.

I want to save you the years of searching it took me and point you to the easiest route to reach whatever being successful in your own mind is.
